Mission and objectives

The Mission of the Institution is to rehabilitate and develop children in special circumstances, boys from the streets or out of school due to socio-economic and psychological factors, boys from poor and vulnerable families as well as those from dysfunctional families to achieve holistic transformation. The mission is achieved under the following objectives:

1

On-boarding and Rehabilitation of boys

Changing the mindset and character of boys who have been exposed to different vices like crime, drug abuse, child abuse, neglect and sexual violence through counselling, provision of a home with mentors and alternative preoccupations.
2

Feeding program and basic health care

Provision of three meals in a day to the boys that ensures good health and basic medication in case of illness as well as referral to respective care centers in case of advanced diseases
3

Pre-primary and primary education as per the government of Kenya Guidelines

With qualified teachers the institution has assured primary education to over 1000 boys since its inception with good grades and 90% transition to secondary education. Currently, the center has seventy (70) boys.
4

Provision of scholarships for secondary and tertiary education

With most of the boys coming from vulnerable backgrounds, the institutions seek sponsors for their secondary and university education.
5

Extracurricular activities

To ensure holistic development and nurturing talents, the center involves the boys in theatre, music, and sports in zonal and county competitions with great results.
6

Basic vocational skills development and life skills

The boys learn how to grow vegetables (gardening & greenhouse farming) poultry(chicken) as well as diary keeping.
7

Spiritual and Moral development

As a catholic institution led by a priest as the administrator, the boys’ benefit from in-house formation in the catholic faith, receiving of sacraments, adoption of good morals as exhibited both in school and at home. They can keep off the vices they had initially.

St Charles Lwanga Boystown was founded by Niermeyer Foundation in 1995

It is situated in Nairobi County, Njiru Sub County, Kangundo Road along Eastern Bypass Road.
David and Florence Niermeyer had visited Nairobi for the celebration of their 25th Wedding Anniversary in 1992. It was their encounter with children begging for coins on the streets in the city of Nairobi that set the wheels of the project in motion.

History

They started with a feeding programme but later realized the need for holistic intervention in the challenges the street boys were facing. They acquired land and started a home they called ‘Boystown Africa) and continued to support the home with local support.

From 2007 to 2015, Boystown was managed directly by the Archdiocese of Nairobi, then later in October 2015 they entrusted the management to the Eudist fathers and The Congregation of Jesus and Mary.

The Archdiocese has appointed a Board of trustees led by Fr. In charge of the Parish under which the home is to guide all the activities of the center and ensure proper utilization of resources. The Administrator (Eudist Fathers) reports to the Board and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Institution in all the components.

The running costs of the home and all its requirements are financed from support through the archdiocese (pays the teachers) and well-wishers who contribute to the feeding program, teaching and learning materials, extracurricular activities, vocational projects as per the resources available.

The founders built temporary structures for classrooms and dormitories, and these have remained so for the last 28 years. Currently, the center is home to eighty (80) boys but has a potential of one hundred and fifty(150) limited by inadequate resources and poor infrastructure.

The Centre was not spared by the effects of COVID-19, as many donors withdrew due to low business incomes. Their recovery has been affected by the high taxation and poor business environment, leading to lay-offs and closure of some of them.

Feeding Programme Provisions of meals to boys, teachers, and non-teaching staff

Our desire and practice are to ensure that the boys have a balanced diet of three meals a day. The home, with support from the boys, grows some vegetables in the farm, but all other foods must be bought from the market. We also get food donations from well-wishers depending on the economic situation in the country with high and low times. It costs at least $50 to keep a boy in school for 1 month. faucibus est.

Infrastructure Projects

Our important infrastructure improvement projects

Construction of an 80 capacity dormitory

The current structures are dilapidated and worn out as they were constructed over 15 years ago as semi-permanent structures. Even in this state the boys really suffer during the cold season as they get very cold and very hot during the hot season. This facility will be complete with inbuilt bathrooms and toilets. The estimated cost is KSH 5 million, complete with beds ($31,250).

Construction of a Junior Secondary Block (3 classrooms and a lab)

Since the year 2022 the government of Kenya-Ministry of education announced changes to the education system with the introduction of competency-based curriculum. This requires pupils to join junior secondary school after grade six.  Each class would cost Ksh 1.5 million ($9,375) x3=$28,125.

Construction of a Dining Hall and Chapel:

Currently, the center does not have a proper dining hall that can also double as a multipurpose hall for meetings with guardians and well-wishers.

Rehabilitation and improvement to a modern chicken house

The current chicken house is the traditional one which does not promote commercialization of the project as both to support the nutritional needs (eggs & Meat) but also for income generating and sustainability (buy feeds, pay some bills).
